General Information
The French classes that we offer are held in our Berkeley house, in a cozy environment. Classes are small and personal, averaging five to eight students. They are scheduled at different times of the day and evening, to accommodate the students’ time requirements.
Emphasis is placed on the spoken word, with a textbook and CD used to supplement instruction. The teaching method is based on the “Connexions” textbooks (Editions Didier) that have been designed particularly for adults. The goals and contents of “Connexions” are closely related to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a result of extensive research, conducted by the Council of Europe and adopted at the beginning of this millennium.

Classes Offered
Beginner Level
This level encompasses a whole series of classes starting with B1, which requires no prior knowledge of French, to B8-10, following the progression implemented in the “Connexions 1” method.
Students can start anywhere, depending on their level. They are encouraged to try several classes to determine the best fit.
These classes correspond to A1 and part of A2 of the CEFR.
Generally in the early part of the year, we also offer a traveler’s French class.
Intermediate Level
•
The classes based on the “Connexions 2” method. They cover part of A2 and B1 of the CEFR.
•
Conversation classes (B1 of CEFR) do not use a textbook. They use topics from current events, usually from an article provided by the instructor, to deepen the student’s command of the French language.
Advanced Level
Three types of classes are offered:
•
Courses using the “Connexions 3” method.
•
Conversation classes in which the students explore and discuss special topics in depth.
•
Literature-based classes, generally centered on the study of a novel, and ending if possible, by an exposure to the cinemagraphic adaptation of the book.
Special Classes
• Intensive classes for adults as needed; please contact the Alliance for information.
