En février 2025, le Ciné Club vous propose quatre films pour vous faire (re)découvrir Catherine Deneuve. Retour sur l'impressionant parcours de l'une des meilleures actrices du 21ème siècle selon le New York Times.

A l’origine, une sœur… 

Née le 22 octobre 1943 à Paris, Catherine suit sa sœur Françoise Dorléac dans le monde du cinéma dès l’âge de 13 ans. Elle réalise alors des doublages et des figurations jusqu’au jour où elle donne la réplique à Johnny Hallyday dans Les Parisiennes en 1962, qui lui chante “Retiens la Nuit”. 

60 ans de carrière et plus de 100 films à son actif

Avec une Palme d’Or remportée à Cannes pour son rôle dans Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964), l'un des premiers films entièrement chantés et un succès populaire autant qu'international, Catherine Deneuve explose. Quelques années plus tard, elle retrouve sa sœur Françoise pour jouer dans une autre comédie musicale : les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1967). Malheureusement, quelques mois après la sortie du film, sa sœur meurt dans un accident de voiture. 

Elle redouble alors de travail et s’illustre auprès des plus grands réalisateurs mondiaux à l'instar de François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Luis Buñuel, Roman Polanski ou Lars von Trier. Internationalement connue dans le genre du film musical, elle maîtrise tout type de registre, comme dans des films plus décalés comme Le Nouveau Testament (2016), dans lequel elle tombe amoureuse d’un gorille.

Plus qu’une actrice, un symbole

Bien plus que pour son jeu d’actrice, Catherine Deneuve est également reconnue pour incarner l’élégance de la femme française et sa liberté. Cela lui vaudra de devenir l’égérie de Chanel et prêter ses traits à la figure de Marianne en 1985.

Loin des conventions et du qu’en dira-t-on, Catherine Deneuve ose aussi prendre position en signant le Manifeste des 343 Femmes pour Le Droit à l’Avortement en 1971 ou, plus récemment, la plus controversée Tribune pour la Liberté d’Importuner en 2018.

At the beginning, a Sister…

Born on October 22, 1943, in Paris, Catherine followed her sister Françoise Dorléac into the world of cinema at the young age of 13. She started with dubbing and minor roles until she landed a part opposite Johnny Hallyday in Les Parisiennes (1962), where he serenaded her with Retiens la Nuit.

60 Years of Stardom and Over 100 Films

With a Palme d’Or at Cannes for her role in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)—one of the first entirely sung films and a popular international success—Catherine Deneuve’s career took off. A few years later, she reunited with her sister Françoise Dorléac to star in another musical, The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967). Tragically, just months after the film’s release, her sister passed away in a car accident.

Deneuve immersed herself in work, collaborating with some of the greatest filmmakers in the world, such as François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Luis Buñuel, Roman Polanski, and Lars von Trier. While internationally recognized for her roles in musicals, she has mastered a wide range of genres, including quirky films like The Brand New Testament (2016), where her character falls in love with a gorilla.

More Than an Actress, a Symbol

Beyond her acting career, Catherine Deneuve is celebrated for embodying the elegance and freedom of the French woman. This earned her the role of Chanel ambassador and, in 1985, the model for Marianne, the emblem of the French Republic.

Unapologetically independent, Deneuve has never shied away from taking a stand. She signed the Manifesto of the 343 Women advocating for abortion rights in 1971 and, more recently, the controversial Letter on the Freedom to Harass in 2018.
